Maestro Jeffrey Silberschlag founded the Chesapeake Orchestra in 1995 and for 15 years the Orchestra has presented the River Concert Series under the stewardship of St. Mary’s College of Maryland – all free-to-the-public. Thousands of concert-goers have gathered each Friday to enjoy many of the most prominent classical music artists performing today.
In 2012 the Orchestra became an independent 501(c)(3) organization and began expanding its residencies. It performed a summer series at Woodlawn Estate and Winery in Ridge, MD and created Pops on the Potomac at National Harbor.
Beginning this year the River Series will be presented under a new partnership with St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The College will continue to provide the venue and on-site support for the concerts. The Orchestra will fund the entire music program. Fundraising for the Orchestra will come from local businesses and its membership program. The College will continue fundraising through a Spring Gala, concert vendors, and audience contributions.
St. Mary’s College of Maryland is the Orchestra’s primary residency and home base, but it is committed to export this unique culture throughout Southern Maryland and beyond. Pops on the Potomac performances are planned again this year with the support of National Harbor Corporation and local Prince Georges County businesses, and a Woodlawn program is being discussed with Slack Wine.
We strive to KEEP THE MUSIC ALIVE and provide a magnet for public gathering, socializing and cultural experiences.
